HOW TO START YOUR FITNESS JOURNEY EVEN IF YOU'VE NEVER EXERCISED BEFORE

The recipe for fitness is eating right and staying active. Working out is one of the healthiest and most rewarding activities in life. From stretching to weight training, running and boxing, to interval training, the world of exercise is dynamic. However, starting a healthy lifestyle can be intimidating for somebody who has never exercised before. Then again, beginning any journey can be met with reservations. Time for a change? Then it’s time ladies to step out of your comfort zone!

Walking into the gym for the first time and seeing people with weights and complex equipment might make you feel a little bewildered. If this sounds like you, there’s nothing to worry about. With the proper information, guidance and equipment, you can quickly start your fitness journey off right.   

Firstly, you need to determine why are you starting this journey? Your goal may be to gain muscle, lose weight, maintain weight, reduce stress, increase energy levels & happy endorphins or to improve your overall health—or a combination of those. Knowing the results you desire, you can design your own exercise routine. It’s not like you have to step into a gym on your first day and lift a tonne of weights. In fact, it's best to take simple steps and work your way up.

If you haven’t exercised in a while or you are just getting back into it after a long period away from the gym, simply start by walking 30-40 minutes a day, outside or on the treadmill. Maybe start with walking three days a week and each week increase until you get to five days a week.  Make sure you are equipped with your favourite tunes to listen to as you walk.  In no time at all, you will find your walking becomes so much easier, you now have more energy, so you may like to walk faster on an incline or you may want to start to run for 10 mins then walk 30 mins and increase this regime each week until you get to being able to run for 40 mins.

Although walking into the gym for the first time can be rather daunting, this will soon become a distant memory as you meet new, positive and interesting friends who have a healthy living lifestyle in common.  The quickest way to meet and engage with fellow gym goers is to join one of the classes at your gym, don’t be shy, everyone in the room has been a beginner at some point & you will find everyone to be so helpful.  If you feel coordination may not be your thing, then try a spin class.  Never be afraid that you may not be able to finish a class, just simply stop, take a breather and go at your own pace.

To prepare yourself for your fitness journey, why not treat yourself to some comfortable fitness clothing or activewear, enhance your exercise experience. Remember, the key to healthy living is consistency with your balanced diet and regular exercise routine. So, keep it simple, easy and exciting.
